Things I Discovered #32
A travel show I'm currently binging, the best donuts, a fun podcast episode, life-altering earphones, a new comic series to check out, poetry, coffee, and an Arabic word of the week!
1. Parts Unknown by Anthony Bourdain - I've been watching a lot of travel vlogs and documentaries lately. One of my favourites is "Parts Unknown" by Anthony Bourdain. The series goes beyond just food; Bourdain explores different cultures around the world, providing an in-depth look into the socio-political fabric of each destination. He described the show as shedding light on "people whose lives are largely unknown to us." What are some of your favourite travel vlogs? Share your reccos in the comments, and I'll be sure to check them out!
2. Best Donuts - Bhoomi Cafe in Bir makes the best donuts, hands down. I've been craving them this entire week. Here's a picture of these soft, gooey, no-frosting, pure joy-filled goofballs to brighten your day. If you're ever in the area, you have to try them!
3. Kill - Not a fan of violent action films, so I was left feeling more exhausted than entertained. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film—well-written and executed—but it's not my cup of tea. I had my eyes closed for half of the fight sequences, phew.
4. Printing in England - This was a really fun episode on the "You're Dead To Me" podcast hosted by the brilliant Greg Jenner. Fun fact: 2024 marks the 550th anniversary of the first book printed in English—A History of Troy produced in 1474 by William Caxton.
5. Practical Magick - I'm truly excited about the work that Coven Classics has been doing. They’re all about community building, comics, art, and witches! Check out their first comic in the series, "Practical Magick." This NFT comic book project follows two college girls who discover magic and the secret life of witches in their mystical town. For more information about the comic and how to mint it, visit their website.
6. CMF by Nothing Buds Pro 2 -Absolutely life-altering. The noise-cancellation feature is too good. I can never go back to regular earphones after this.
7. The Dam by David Almond - An interesting children's book that combines lyrical prose with stunning illustrations by Levi Pinfold. The story is based on a true event, capturing the haunting beauty of a valley flooded to create a reservoir. It's a touching tale about memory, loss, and the power of music!
8. Hazelnut Coffee by Columbia Brew - This hazelnut coffee is my new love. I can't wait to wake up and have it first thing in the morning. Super easy to make too.
9. Telephone Conversation - Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian playwright, poet, and essayist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. This satirical poem sheds light on the absurdity of racial prejudice through a phone call between a prospective tenant and a landlady, revealing the latent racism in everyday interactions:
10. Word of the Week: Arabic Word فرح (Farah) - Meaning joy or happiness. This word beautifully captures a state of delight and cheerfulness. Spread some فرح this week by sharing moments of joy with those around you!
